Taylor Swift Announces Surprise Single 'Patient Zero' After 'Impatiently Waiting'

Taylor Swift kept fans guessing with days of cryptic clues, then finally revealed the payoff: a brand new single, "Patient Zero," dropping this Friday.

Taylor Swift just surprised fans with new music once again. The hitmaker revealed her latest single, "Patient Zero," will be available on Friday, September 25.

"I've been impatiently waiting to tell you that my brand new single 'Patient Zero' will be out on September 25 (!!!!!!!!!!!!) and it's available to pre-order now on my website for 24 hours," Swift wrote on Instagram alongside a photo of herself wearing a black turtleneck top.

According to her website, the latest track is part of her recent album, “The Life of a Showgirl,” though it’s unclear if it’s a bonus track.

To mark the announcement, Swift's website switched to a dark gray interface from the original orange, revealing three exclusive CD versions of the single: a standard edition, an acoustic version, and a piano version, each with a different cover photo of the award-winning singer dressed in black. The Collector's Edition CDs are available for pre-order until September 23 at 2 p.m. ET, or while supplies last.

If you’ve been paying attention days prior to the announcement, you would have caught a few Easter eggs from Swift.

According to Rolling Stone, on Swift’s “My Letter” page on her website, a third piece of paper appeared on Monday, September 21, underneath her original letter from May 2025 and the “Showgirl” track list. Speculation is high that Swift is teasing a re-recording of her self-titled debut album, which turns 20 this year.

The next day, Swift updated her Instagram bio to read, "And, baby, that's sh0w business f0r y0u," coinciding with the alteration of lyrics from “Showgirl” on Apple Music, swapping the letter O’s for zeros.

"Patient Zero" follows another new song Swift released back in June, "I Knew It, I Knew You" for Disney and Pixar's “Toy Story 5,” which she wrote for the character Jessie.

When she announced the song in June, Swift reflected on the realization of a dream. "I've always dreamed of getting to write for these characters who I've adored since I was a 5 year old kid watching the first Toy Story movie," she wrote on Instagram. "I fell instantly in love with Toy Story 5 when I was lucky enough to see it in its early stages, and I wrote this song as soon as I got home from the screening. Sometimes you just know, right?"

The release of "Patient Zero" also comes just days before another milestone achievement for Swift. On Sunday, she will be honored with the inaugural Artist Director Honors award at the MTV Video Music Awards.
