Miley Cyrus Is Just 'Miley' Now, and Her New Single Wants You off Your Phone

Miley Cyrus has a new name, a new sound, and a new message: put the phone down. Her first single in over a year has arrived, and it comes with a rebrand nobody saw coming.

Miley Cyrus had a few things to say around the release of her latest single.

First, she’s dropping her last name and now goes by just Miley. And second, she wants everyone off their phones and back on the dance floor.

The singer released her newest single, "Bass Persuades," on Thursday, September 3, her first single from her upcoming tenth studio album of the same name, and she confirmed she's dropping her last name for this new era.

The song leans into '80s-style synths and a dance-pop beat, with MIley singing about being "glued" to a phone screen and urging listeners to "surrender to the night" instead.

The accompanying video, directed by longtime collaborator Mert Alas, follows her from a solo dance break into a full street takeover, with backup dancers and a crowd trailing behind her by the end.

Miley teased the announcement for days prior, posting red-tinted photos on Instagram and short clips from the music video.

When she finally announced the album on September 1, she wrote, "Music takes hold of us. We feel it, sing it, sometimes dance to it, let it out and carry on. It is powerful, vulnerable, sweet and strong. Heart full, heartache, every part of life in between. That’s what the title means to me.”

She also thanked her fans for being part of the realization of her wildest dreams, hoping they enjoy the new album.

Miley will also return to the stage for two shows at the Hollywood Bowl on October 16 and 18, her first major performances since 2022.
