Tom Cruise Announces 'Days of Thunder 2' Summer 2028 Release with Anne Hathaway

A NASCAR track, a viral clip, and one very pregnant co-star. Here's how Tom Cruise confirmed the sequel to 'Days of Thunder' on his social media, decades after the original hit theaters.

Tom Cruise took to social media to reveal his latest project in the works — the sequel to "Days of Thunder," officially set for release on June 2, 2028.

The actor shared a video featuring him with his "Days of Thunder 2" co-star, Anne Hathaway, greeting the audience. Then the pair slowly moves back from the screen to reveal a NASCAR race car on the track in Daytona, with the words "Days of Thunder Summer 2028" printed on its door.

As they both lean on opposite sides of the car door, Cruise asks Hathaway, "Now what?" to which the visibly pregnant star responds, "Now what? We make the movie!" adding, "I'm gonna have this baby, then we're gonna make the movie." Cruise replies, "That's a good idea. You have the baby, then we'll go make the movie."

Restating it for viewers, Cruise, who is producing with Jerry Bruckheimer and Tommy Harper, says, "We're coming out summer 2028. Don't be late."

"Days of Thunder 2" will be filmed for IMAX but will also be available in Dolby Cinema, 4DX, and other premium large-screen formats.

Paramount Pictures tapped Jonathan Levine to direct the project, with Cruise reprising his role as NASCAR driver Cole Trickle opposite Hathaway, who will play a team owner and engineer. Nicole Kidman, who starred in the original film, is not expected to be part of the sequel.

The original "Days of Thunder," directed by the late Tony Scott, hit theaters in the summer of 1990 and grossed $157.9 million worldwide. Cruise conceived the story himself, with Robert Towne writing the screenplay.
