Stockard Channing Makes Rare Red Carpet Return at 'Practical Magic 2' Premiere

Channing's red carpet outing comes just weeks after the 82-year-old actress opened up about retreating from public life following the 2014 death of her longtime partner.

Stockard Channing stepped back into the spotlight this week when she attended her first red carpet event in over two years.

The 82-year-old actress showed up at the European premiere of "Practical Magic 2" in London on Wednesday, wearing a tailored midnight blue suit with a cream blouse, a lariat chain necklace, and duster earrings.

Channing posed for photos with co-stars Sandra Bullock, Nicole Kidman, Joey King, Maisie Williams, and Dianne Wiest at the event, celebrating the sequel to the 1998 classic, “Practical Magic.”

In the latest installment, Channing reprises her role as Aunt Frances, alongside Wiest as Aunt Jet. The film, which also stars Lee Pace, Xolo Maridueña, and Solly McLeod, will be out in theaters on September 11.

The “Grease” alum’s latest appearance comes on the heels of a candid essay she wrote for the Sunday Times a few weeks back. In the editorial piece, she spoke about retreating from public life following the 2014 death of her longtime partner, cinematographer Daniel Gillham.

After 25 years together, Channing said the loss reshaped the pattern of her life and left her living alone outside Hollywood. She sold her Los Angeles home and relocated to the U.K. in 2019.

Despite being mostly away from the spotlight in recent years, Channing said her decades-long career keeps her recognizable across generations, whether through "Practical Magic," "The West Wing," or "Grease." She also said she isn't sure what she'll be taking on next, if at all, after directing a show in Edinburgh earlier this year on top of her role in the sequel.

"Acting is like everything in life," she said. "You never know what's going to happen."

“Practical Magic” introduced sisters Sally and Gillian, played by Bullock and Kidman, as they came of age under their aunts' guidance and reluctantly embraced their magic. The sequel picks up decades later, following the same sisters, older and wiser, as they finally confront that curse head-on, this time with a new generation by their side.
