JoAnna Garcia Swisher Opens Up About 'Sweet Magnolias' Ending, and Her New Series With the Show's Creator

JoAnna Garcia Swisher is saying goodbye to "Sweet Magnolias" after five seasons, but a new chapter is already unfolding, with the show's creator also on board.

As one door closes, another has opened for JoAnna Garcia Swisher, who bids goodbye to “Sweet Magnolias” after five seasons and teams up with the show’s creator for a new series.

The announcement of “Sweet Magnolias’” cancellation was shared on the show’s Instagram account, stating,“All grand adventures must eventually end. And here, dear friends, is where ours does.”

Following the news, Garcia Swisher, who starred as Maddie Townsend for all five seasons, shared a lengthy tribute on Instagram, with a video montage of behind-the-scenes moments from the show.

"How do you say goodbye to something that became so much more than a job?" she wrote. "Seven years. Five seasons. A million tiny moments that somehow became a whole life."

The actress opened up about how the show became a source of comfort during a difficult time in her life. "Sweet Magnolias came into my world during a chapter that held some of my deepest loss and, somehow, some of my greatest joy," she wrote. "I lost both of my parents during those early seasons, and in a time when I wasn't always sure how to keep moving forward, Serenity gave me somewhere to go. These people gave me somewhere to belong."

Garcia Swisher thanked the cast and crew for helping her through those trying times. "They made me laugh when I was sure I had forgotten how. They let me be sad when I needed to be. They showed up. Again and again and again," she said. "And maybe that's what I will carry with me most."

Garcia Swisher also reflected on the show's themes that mirrored real life. "This show was always about showing up for the people you love. About friends becoming family. About life not turning out exactly the way you planned, and choosing to build something beautiful anyway," she wrote. "Somewhere along the way, while we were telling those stories, we started living them too."

She ended her message, grateful for the people she worked with and the fans who watched the show. "Five seasons. Seven years. One really, really beautiful chapter of my life. I'm not quite sure I'm ready to close it. But I am so incredibly grateful I got to live it," she wrote, signing off with, "Thank you, Serenity."

According to Deadline, it was a last-minute cancellation that was made the day after the contracts of the cast expired. Meanwhile, a new series has already been greenlit, which Garcia Swisher as executive producer and possibly acting in it. Anderson will lead the project as showrunner.

The new show, “Ladies of the House,” is based on a novel by Lauren Edmondson, and is described as a modern take on “Sense and Sensibility.” The story revolves around a winery owner’s wife and her two adult daughters who navigate life, relationships, and their family business after the unexpected death of the father.

Garcia Swisher shared that she was immediately drawn to the story after reading the novel: “From the moment I read Lauren Edmondson’s Ladies of the House, I fell completely in love with Daisy, Cricket, and Wallis: their relationships, their messiness, their strength, and most of all, their heart.”

She brought the novel to Anderson, who was excited to develop the story for the screen. “When Jo shared the novel with me, I immediately saw the foundation for a series centered on three women grappling with the complexities of family, friendship, and romance — the kind of stories Jo and I most enjoy telling,” Anderson recalled.

The women are both looking forward to this new chapter, working together under the production company Rolling Clover and with partners at Black Label.
