George Clooney couldn't have picked a better friend to have in his corner, even from thousands of miles away. As he accepted a lifetime achievement honor in Venice, Brad Pitt sent a message that was equal parts love letter and roast.

Brad Pitt couldn’t attend the event honoring his good friend George Clooney at the Venice Film Festival, but he made sure to send a heartfelt message, with a little bit of humor.

Clooney was in the Italian city to receive the Venice International Film Festival’s Golden Lion for lifetime achievement on Wednesday, September 2, and as Laura Dern presented the honor to him, she also read the message Pitt sent for his “Ocean’s 11” co-star.

“He can do, perform, accomplish, compete at most anything and does it better than any of us, but please, keep him off the dance floor,” the message began. “He doesn’t know. And now, this pigeon-toed kid from Kentucky, elder statesman, who when you can’t get Brad Pitt you know Clooney will show up because he never met an award he wouldn’t run to, is getting a lifetime achievement award? So why? Why do we love George Clooney?”

“He’s a rogue, a prankster, an altruist, an actor, an athlete,” Dern continued to read. “The only guy you’d want in a crisis. A father, a husband, a global citizen, a defender of justice, and...a really bad dancer.”

Clooney and Pitt have been known to tease and prank each other throughout the course of their decades-long friendship, which began when they appeared together in “Ocean’s 11” back in 2001.

One of Pitt's favorite stories to tease Clooney about is beating him out for a role in “Thelma & Louise." Clooney told The Times that he made it to the final test but lost to Pitt, whose career was launched following that role.
