When Michael Jackson passed away, the custody and well-being of his children were thrust into the limelight. At the time of his death, his kids, Prince Jackson, Paris Jackson, and Bigi Jackson, were 12, 11, and 7 years old, respectively. The children's mothers are Debbie Rowe, mother to the two eldest children, and an unidentified surrogate for Bigi. Katherine Jackson, Michael's mother, alongside Tito Joe "TJ" Jackson, stepped in as co-guardians.

In a turn of guardianship, Katherine Jackson, at 87 years of age, has decided to step down as co-guardian for Bigi, now 15. Court documents detail that she feels TJ, 39, can assume guardianship responsibilities. The documents read, "Katherine is no longer needed to fulfill the duties that were necessary when joint-guardians were appointed... Given her own age and the fact that [Bigi] is now 15 years old, Katherine feels that TJ is able to assume all necessary responsibilities of the guardianship for the Minor Child."
