Twilight Saga: The Real-life Partners
With the way Kim Cattrall and Sarah Jessica Parker’s feud always took the spotlight, fans of the show weren’t too sure if there would ever be a Sex And The City reboot or even a reunion episode. But fret not because 2021 is the year of miracles! Find out all about the new Sex And The City reboot and if Kim Cattrall is going to make an appearance in it.
Guess what? 2021 really is our year of redemption after 2020 with news of a scrapped Sex And The City 3 film and Kim Cattrall’s refusal to even talk about it. Looks like HBO has other plans because a Sex And The City reboot has been confirmed for HBO Max. But the reboot isn't as perfect as we would have liked it to be.
But the excitement was swiftly followed by disappointment because, as it turned out, not all of the beloved actresses were going to be there. Sarah Jessica Parker, Cynthia Nixon, and Kristin Davis will return to their roles. So, what is going on with Kim Cattrall, and why are we not getting Samantha in the reboot?
Meanwhile, fan-favorite Kim Cattrall won’t reunite with her former colleagues. Everyone was sad about it, and fans repeatedly commented on Sarah Jessica Parker’s post about the show’s revival, saying that they’d miss Samantha. Sarah Jessica Parker's response to all of it was pretty strange, too.
After all, Samantha was one of the most memorable characters, right? Naturally, Parker wrote that they’d all miss her too because they love her so much. And when another fan commented that Kim didn’t join because the two actresses disliked each other, Sarah replied: “No. I don’t dislike her. I’ve never said that. Never would.” Her reason as to why Samantha wasn't in the reboot wasn't enough, though.
And she went on to add that Samantha just wasn’t part of this story. But her reply didn’t satisfy the fans. They still can’t imagine Samantha not being part of Sex and the City and kept on expressing their disappointment over not seeing what happened to their beloved character. However, there is a reason why fans insist on including Samantha in the reboot.
And we can understand their point. And we were eager to see her once again and learn what happened to her after all these years. By the way, fans' response to writing Samantha out of the reboot was pretty wild.
Many fans don’t even see a point in reviving the series without Samantha, saying that she was the heart of the show. They even compared it to doing a Spice Girls reunion without Posh or reviving Destiny’s Child without Beyoncé. Let's see if critics felt the same way, too.
Even Variety wrote that the revival “won’t have the pulse of enthusiastic ... energy that made for some of the original series’ best moments.” People also pleaded with the showrunners to at least explain Samantha’s absence in the reboot and address what happened to her. Moving on to fan suggestions and theories that would actually work in favor of Samantha...
One of the fans even suggested giving Kim Cattrall her own spin-off show called Sex and the Other City set in London. Quite an excellent idea, right? Find out if Samantha's actress is on board with this idea, though.
But we're not sure they’re going to take this on, first of all, because Kim herself doesn’t want to come back to her old role. But before we get to the reboot, let’s look at why we might not see our favorite, catty Samantha on it, from the beginning...
Sarah Jessica Parker and Cynthia Nixon were childhood friends and also part of the same theatre group. On the set of Sex and the City, Nixon and Parker’s friendship only grew stronger. The two welcomed Kristin Davis AKA Charlotte York to form a tight-knit group. Kim Cattrall, ten years older than the rest, says she often found herself outside of the circle of trust. It still wasn't as dramatic till a certain stimulus kept prodding.
So, the press ended up turning their attention to the juiciest story of all - Cattrall’s feud with Parker... Was Kim Cattrall left out? Rather than becoming a part of Parker and Nixon’s friendship like Kristin Davis, she found herself on the outside looking in. While the cast repeatedly downplayed rumors of tension, the media refused to let it go.
According to reports, relations took a dive when Cattrall negotiated for more money after Parker’s significant salary raise in season two. Parker was effectively being paid two salaries as she also served as an executive producer on the show. The ladies were not happy with Cattrall’s campaign for more money. Things got pretty heated...
Even though the cast tried to shut down the inquiry, rumors of the feud were reignited when Parker, Davis, and Nixon sat together at the 2004 Emmy Awards. Cattrall was seen occupying a different table. Years later in a Telegraph report, Cattrall said, "Are we the best of friends? No. We're professional actresses. We have our own separate lives." Parker's response to it was pretty astonishing and unbelievable.
Parker continued to deny the rumors of tension, insisting the four were friends. She went on to say that she wished she was closer to Cattrall. "Honestly, we are all friends and I wish I saw more of Kim..." Looks like everything had settled till another cast member riled things up.
In 2018, Kristin Davis shared a throwback picture on her Instagram account of her at that ill-fated Emmy’s with Nixon and Parker. Cattrall was conspicuously missing, leading the media to claim that she was also firmly on team Parker. But she’s never commented on the feud. Finally, Parker went as far as to put herself on Cattrall's team!
When asked about rumors of tension on set, Parker said she adored Cattrall and wouldn’t have done the movie without her. Cattrall backed Parker up to Daily Mail, calling her fantastic. Here's what she actually said about the whole squabble.
"I think Sarah was right: people don’t want to believe that we get on. They have too much invested in the idea of two strong, successful women fighting with each other. It makes for juicy gossip... She and I are sick of this. It’s exhausting talking about it," said Cattrall. The next thing we knew, Cattrall went off in a totally opposite tangent.
Cattrall later sang a very different tune, telling Piers Morgan that she’d never been friends with her co-stars. It all started in 2017 when she refused to star in a third Sex and the City movie. The idea was scrapped, even though the script was ready. Parker called it a “beautiful, funny, heartbreaking, joyful, very relatable script and story.” Why did Cattrall refuse to be in the film, though?
Cattrall claimed she’d moved on and had told the producers in 2016. “This is about…an empowered decision in my life to end one chapter and start another... It's a great part. I played it past the finish line and then some, and I loved it.” But the gossip columns went crazy, alleging that she’d made too many demands. Surprisingly or unsurprisingly, Parker and Davis' reactions made things worse.
Parker and Davis both expressed their disappointment, adding fuel to the rumors that Cattrall had acted like a diva. Cattrall resented their reactions, "This is really where I take to task the people from Sex and the City, and specifically Sarah Jessica Parker. I think she could've been nicer…I don't know what her issue is." But talk of the 3rd film was again churned up in April 2020.
The four women, yes, including Kim Cattrall did virtually reunite for a podcast in April 2020. This again led to some speculation of a 3rd film which was quickly shut down by an inside source. So, what was Cattrall's reaction to it all?
Cattrall was again asked about the feud in September 2020. Like any sane person who must be tired of being asked the same question, she said that she had no regrets and was simply done talking about it. Here's what she had to say and why she doesn't have any regrets.
Cattrall simply doesn’t want to talk about her relationship with Parker anymore. “Everything is on Google, so I encourage you to Google it, about anything I’ve ever said,” she told the Los Angeles Times last year and added that she doesn’t have regrets about anything. Why were fans so adamant about seeing Kim in the reboot, though?
So, it’s actually not surprising that Cattrall didn’t want to join the new series. Sure, it makes fans sad that they won’t see the character who would’ve offered a fresh perspective on the show. After all, even being in her 60s, Samantha would probably remain the only Sex and the City character who would still be single. However, Cattrall had other notions about her character.
Seeing a liberated woman at that age is a rare occasion, and it would’ve been fantastic! And don’t even get us started on how we miss her one-liners! But despite knowing how much fans love Samantha, Cattrall knows that she moved on from the character a long time ago. By the way, she wasn't too thankless about the whole opportunity...
“I’m lucky enough to have the choice, not that I haven’t worked for it. I have,” the actress said. “It’s something I feel very lucky to have and I’m very protective of it. I wouldn’t be any good doing something that I really didn’t want to do.” Kim didn’t return because she didn’t want to! And she voiced her position on doing only the things she wanted to years ago. “I don’t want to be in a situation for even an hour where I’m not enjoying myself.” Moving on to things that she is doing and that she does enjoy.
Kim said to all the upset fans who wished to see her as Samantha again that she had no desire to do it. Besides, she has other things to do as she’s now the star of the Fox series, Filthy Rich. And Kim also thinks that if everyone loves Samantha so much, the best decision is to find another actress to play the character! Find out who she would like to see replace her.
“Maybe they could make it an African American Samantha Jones! Or a Hispanic Samantha Jones!” Cattrall once suggested. What do you think about that suggestion? Well, even Sarah Jessica Parker spoke about finding someone else to play Samantha and jokingly offered the part to… Ellen DeGeneres! What did Kim have to say when news of the reboot was confirmed?
When Cattrall learned about the reboot, she said that Ellen would be fabulous, but she’d prefer Oprah. “Oprah was always my 1st,” the actress tweeted at the time. “But then there are the goddess's: Tiffany Haddish or Sofia Vergara. So many fabulous actresses to choose from that will make Samantha their own!” Back to what's been going on with the reboot.
Do you think that it’s a good idea to replace Cattrall in the reboot? Anyway, let’s wait and see what Sex and the City will look like without Kim. Production of the new limited series is planned to begin in spring. We do have a chance to see someone as lively and vibrant as Samantha in the reboot, though!
In a recent virtual interview on Watch What Happens Live with Andy Cohen with Cynthia Nixon and Sharon Stone, talk turned to rumors that Stone could replace Cattrall in the potential third film. Here's how this totally unexpected casting potential was discovered.
The two actresses are currently in Netflix’s Ratched."I did not hear about it, but any time I could have an opportunity to work with Cynthia would be an honor to me," Stone said. Nixon supported the idea but was quick to acknowledge Cattrall. "I think Sharon would be, of course, totally amazing," she said. "Kim was incredibly great as Samantha.” Nixon also brought up another option.
"I've also heard many people say, including Kim Cattrall…that if we were to have a different fourth woman…maybe it would be a woman of color." In fact, Nixon recently told the Radio Times how the cast had always been aware of how “white” the show was, which she said now makes it look outdated. Looks like there could be another actress in the talks...one who almost played Carrie!
By the way, did you know that Sarah Jessica Parker wasn’t always the done deal for Carrie? And if she would have said no, the producers had another actress in mind. House star, Lisa Edelstein would have been the second choice if Parker officially refused. A good replacement, isn't it? Are there any confirmed cast additions to the reboot?
So, does that mean that she might come in to fill the shoes of Samantha? Or it could also be Sharon Stone who already has Nixon’s approval. While Parker believes that the fourth friend is New York City itself, let’s see who is actually going to fill the gap left by Kim Cattrall in the reboot.
Since we have established that no one can replace Samantha, the reboot is taking another direction. Instead of having a fourth friend in Carrie’s circle, the writers have decided to include a cameo role of a certain 71-year-old celebrity.

And since the show came under fire for not being too diverse, the reboot is trying to make amends. One of the top choices for that cameo is none other than Caitlyn Jenner. Not only is she a part of the Kardashian clan and an athlete, but she is also a transgender woman. Other than that, why is she the perfect choice, though?
Her inspiring story that age is after all just a number makes her the perfect choice for Sex And The City as it followed the lives of unapologetic and empowered women. Actually, a source even revealed as to why they were so hell-bent on getting Jenner for the show.
“Caitlyn has been a media fixture in one way or another for going on 50 years. She’s really perfect for an appearance,” a source told Hollywood Life. “They want new faces for the show, but they want people viewers actually know and care about too.” Did you know that she is not the only newest addition to the cast!?
That’s not it! For women of color especially, there is more cause for celebration as the reboot has decided to be more inclusive. A source confirmed, “We’re introducing two new characters, strong and feisty women of color, who will help introduce the show to a new generation of viewers and more accurately reflect the world we live in” So, what is this show actually called? Sex And The City 2: Not The Movie?
Okay, enough of calling it the reboot. Apparently, it has been titled “And Just Like That…” which is an ode to Carrie’s monologues and blogs in the show. It is also going to have its stars as executive producers with Parker, Davis, Nixon, and Michael Patrick King helming the show. But what is it about?
HBO Max was also generous enough to tell us a little bit more about the show. It is supposedly a “new chapter” of the show that was widely successful in the 90s. With a 10-episode storyline, it is going to follow the lives of Carrie, Miranda, and Charlotte in their 50s. Have the Sex And The City stars said anything about this reboot, yet?
The actresses, Parker, Nixon, and Davis were very excited as they all revealed a bit of the show’s trailer on their Instagram accounts. The teaser featured scenes of New York City with the text “And just like that the story continues…” Surprisingly, there is a very corporate reason as to why the reboot was created after the constant rejection of future films and spin-offs.
After tons of rumors and a shelved third film, the reboot was approved by WarnerMedia’s OTT platform, HBO Max. As it was launched last year, it decided to green-light the show as a way to garner loyal fans and an audience to the streaming service.
While we are definitely going to miss Samantha, we are super excited for the reboot. From the glamour to the melodramatic twists and turns in Carrie’s life, And Just like That… is definitely going to be a hit. Who do you think are going to be the newest additions to the cast?
